Pathways Courses at Danville School
At Danville School, we are committed to creating personalized learning opportunities that support every student’s individual goals, strengths, interests, and learning styles. In alignment with Vermont’s Act 77, our secondary educators work closely with students to develop flexible pathways toward graduation while encouraging reflection, growth, and meaningful educational experiences throughout high school.
Flexible Pathways provide students with opportunities to personalize their education through a variety of learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. These opportunities may include:
- Compass: Self-Directed Learning & Service Practicum
- Career Exploration
- Online Courses (Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative – VTVLC)
- Internship & Work Study (Independent Study – Grades 11–12)
These pathways are designed to help students explore their interests, build valuable skills, and prepare for success in college, careers, and beyond.

This course provides students with the opportunity to develop self-directed learning skills through goal setting, community engagement, and independent project work. Students establish academic, career, and personal goals while building competencies in time management, organization, and accountability. A community service component allows students to collaborate with local organizations and develop leadership and problem-solving skills. The course culminates in an independent passion project demonstrating applied learning and critical thinking.

This course introduces students to a range of career pathways through self-assessment, research, and experiential learning. Students examine their interests, strengths, and values while exploring career clusters and postsecondary options. Emphasis is placed on skill development in goal setting, communication, and professionalism. Students will complete career-related activities, including resume development, interview practice, and a personalized career exploration portfolio.

Students may enroll in online courses through the Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative (VTVLC), which offers standards-based instruction taught by certified educators. Courses are delivered in asynchronous or instructor-supported formats with defined expectations and timelines. Students are responsible for managing their progress, meeting deadlines, and maintaining communication with instructors and a local school mentor. This option supports the development of independent learning and digital communication skills.

This course provides juniors and seniors with the opportunity to participate in supervised internships or work-based learning experiences aligned with their career interests. Students are responsible for securing and maintaining placements and demonstrating professionalism in a workplace setting. Coursework includes goal setting, reflective assignments, and the completion of an individualized project connecting workplace experience to academic and career development. Enrollment requires administrative approval and demonstrated readiness for independent study.
